Modify mealtime

Marla Ahlgrimm explains that eating smaller meals spread out throughout the day can reduce the agonizing abdominal bloat that plagues many PMS sufferers. Likewise, she reports that reducing salt intake can lessen fluid retention and abdominal distention. Foods with a high level of complex carbohydrates (whole grains, vegetables, fruits, etc.) offer energy that can be easily digested. Alcohol, caffeine, and sugar should be consumed in moderation.

Engage in exercise

Regular exercise can improve overall health and lessen the impact of hormone-related depression and fatigue, says Marla Ahlgrimm.  Additionally, exercise helps spread oxygen throughout the body, which will help with everything from muscle stiffness to mood.

Getting enough sleep is one of the most important things women can do for themselves to mitigate the bothersome side effects of womanhood, says Marla Ahlgrimm. Most women need 7 to 9 hours of sleep every day in order to look and feel their very best. Ahlgrimm suggests avoiding intense physical activity just before bed for more restful night sleep.

Sooth with supplements

Some PMS symptoms may be exacerbated by vitamin and mineral deficiencies, Marla Ahlgrimm explains. Calcium, magnesium, and Vitamin E are all available over-the-counter and may help with symptoms including breast tenderness, fluid retention, and cramps. A number of herbal remedies, such as St. John’s wort and evening Primrose oil, may be effective ways to relieve PMS symptoms.

Marla Ahlgrimm concludes by reminding that each woman’s premenstrual syndrome is different and no one remedy regimen will work for everyone. She stresses that diet, exercise, and sleep, however, are vital for overall health and well-being.
